Rain Africa branches out into perfumery

The carton, glass refill and fired porcelain cocoon shaped packaging used for Twig by Rain AfricaRain Africa, well known for its eco-ethical ranges of bath and body products, has branched out into a new beauty category offering consumers another sensory delight. In September 2015, Rain officially launched its exclusive range of artisanal perfumes, which also embodies the core values of the brand. These include: natural products derived from African ingredients which are wild harvested in a sustainably way, while creating long-term economic opportunities for its local suppliers and rural communities.

The range of artisanal perfumes is made up of three variants: Leaf; Nectar and Twig. Each is as unique as its name and is on sale at all Rain Africa outlets and online via its website.

Beautifully formulated

Twig opens with a hint of cool breeze from a fynbos mountain fringed with a citrus orchard and fields of lavender. The fresh beginning warms on the skin to reveal a heady floral theme underpinned by spicy notes of cedar. As the fragrance deepens, it surrenders the resinous sweetness of the Namibian omumbiri, the treasure of the Himba people, smoky muhuhu from East Africa and a honey scented labden blended with vetiver, oak moss and patchouli.

The top notes of Twig are lavender, bergamont, Cape may, Cape rosemary and neroli. Moroccan rose, Egyptian jasmine, rose geranium, Cape chamomile and cedar atlas are the heart of this fragrance, while the base notes reveal omumbiri, muhuhu, labdanum, patchouli, vertiver, oakmoss, and ambergris.

Perfectly packaged

The bottle used for this perfume is extremely special. It is high fired porcelain and was designed by a German mould engineer. It is inspired by the cocoon of a caterpillar – which gives life to a butterfly – carried away on the wings of the wind.

An additional innovation with this perfume bottle is that it is refillable. Simply push it out from the bottom with your finger or a pen, insert the refill and gently knock the cocoon at its base to lock the refill in place. The refills are also ideal for carrying in one’s handbag as they are not as heavy as the standard cocoon shaped bottle. The refills are sold separately.

Foraging in Africa

Incorporating natural African ingredients, all of the artisanal perfumes have their own signature fragrance that brings to life the subtle aroma of Africa. Recent foraging trips on the continent brought forth an array of innovative ingredients, such as:
