The company was also placed first in the Chemicals sector. At the same event, BASF West Africa received its third certification as Top Employer Nigeria for its outstanding employee offerings within the African category.

The annual international research undertaken by the Top Employers Institute globally certifies excellence in the conditions that employers create for their people. When companies develop great working conditions, employees are highly engaged and motivated to give their best.

Central to the Top Employers programme is that participating companies must complete a stringent research process and meet the required high standard in order to achieve the certification. Topics covered include Talent Strategy; Workforce Planning; On Boarding; Learning and Development; Performance Management; Leadership Development; Career and Succession Management; Compensation and Benefits; and Organisational Culture.

To reinforce the validity of the process, all responses were independently audited. The outcome of the research has verified both BASF South Africa and BASF West Africa as having outstanding employee conditions and earned them a coveted spot amongst a select group of certified Top Employers.

According to BASF South Africa managing director, Benoit Fricard, BASF has a strong focus on developing its employees. ‘At BASF, we constantly strive to create a working environment where employees feel engaged and empowered to learn, develop and grow,’ he says. ‘Employee engagement is one of our priorities where we place every effort to ensure that employees feel a sense of belonging, that they are committed to contributing to the organisation’s success whilst also developing themselves professionally and personally. We want to enable employees to strengthen their contribution to the company’s success by having the right people at the right time at the right place. We believe talent is in everyone and we develop employees throughout all levels to grow within the company.’

According to head of Human Resources for BASF Africa, Sharmila Govind, specific focus is placed on creating a culture of learning and development. ‘When we support our employees to reach their potential and aspirations it will help us to form the best team and achieve our common goals,’ she says.

‘The premise of BASF’s Value Proposition - The Power of Connected Minds - encompasses our four Employer Brand Fundamentals: Connecting, Engaging, Caring and Learning. Being certified as the Top Employer once again reinforces that we are an industry leader when it comes to our employee offerings,’ she says.
