Uniting African researchers to advance phytomedicine

Newly founded by Professor Namrita Lall with the help of her dedicated colleagues and students, The African Phytomedicine Scientific Society aims to serve as a collaborative African research network on medicinal plants and natural products.

The goal of the society is to become a platform that represents Africa’s rich biodiversity and world-class researchers. It will also aim to foster scientific alliance, by promoting collaboration among African researchers, ultimately contributing to the advancement of phytomedicine on the African continent.

In a LinkedIn post, Professor Lall said: “The vision and mission of the society is to stimulate and facilitate the interaction of African researchers, to foster new scientific developments in ethnopharmacology and natural products research, to expand regional research capacities and finally to facilitate networking and the exchange of research platforms.”

Although focused on academia, the society will encourage the participation of all role-players in the natural products chain. From the initial ethnobotanical selection of medicinal plants by Traditional Health Practitioners to the final stage of pharmaceutical development by industry representatives, the African Phytomedicine Scientific Society will encompass a multi-disciplinary effort to provide, connect and promote phytomedicinal research and development in Africa.
