The BotanicalsPlus FermBiotic Series is a skin wellness platform of microbiome-supporting fermented complexes derived from extracts and microorganisms. Fermentation is a natural approach to optimising the beauty and wellness benefits of mother nature.

Fermentation is the deliberate enzymatic or microbial transformation of organic substances. It increases the bioavailability of extracts for topical use. This means skin, scalp and hair can easily absorb more bio-actives – boosting the efficacy of your formulations. Fermentation naturally boosts the nutrient density of extracts, increasing their benefit potential.
The fermentation process creates new substances, such as amino acids, organic acids and antioxidants – all of which are beneficial for the skin, scalp and hair. These ferments provide microbiome support for skin and scalp by adding prebiotic and postbiotic elements into formulations.
Through microorganism-induced fermentation, the botanical biomass is bio-transmogrified. This is when the fermentation process begins to reduce the size of the active molecules from extracts, ultimately making botanical actives more bioavailable for topical use. This frees up beneficial components which may otherwise be trapped.
The FermBiotic Series is a platform of microbiome-supporting complexes derived from extracts and microorganisms. There are four FermBiotic products available from BotanicalsPlus, which was acquired by the Vantage Group in 2021. Each product is unique depending on the formulator’s requirements.
Hydration booster
Inspired by veganism, Legume FermBiotic G with chickpea, kudzu root and alfalfa unlocks the power of highly beneficial legumes with the aid of pre- and postbiotic rich fungi, Galactomyces candidus for topical use.

Galactomyces candidus ferment filtrate is a rich source of prebiotics, postbiotics and antioxidants. It supports a balanced skin microbiome and increases skin elasticity, hydration and skin cell viability. Some studies have shown a reduction in hyper-pigmentation and improved skin brightening. This ferment has been known to improve the appearance of large pores and combat excessive oiliness on the skin and scalp, supporting troubled skin and strengthening the barrier.
In an in vitro study conducted on keratinocytes, Legume FermBiotic G was shown to increase hyaluroniadase-1 (HAS1) expression by 71%. HAS1 is the enzyme produced by keratinocytes. It is responsible for naturally producing hyaluronic acid in the skin. The combination of chickpea, kudzu root and alfalfa enhance the benefits of the complex, adding to its claims.
Protection booster
Superfruit FermBiotic G is a fermented, phytonutrient and antioxidant-rich complex that offers optimal environmental protection with pre- and postbiotic properties for skin microbiome wellness. Its key components include Galactomyces candidum, Kakadu plum, baobab fruit and avocado.
With a Horac EC50 test value of 7.8ug/mℓ, Superfruit FermBiotic G protects skin against environmental stressors by reducing and counteracting the production of free radicals that cause oxidative stress. It can also maximise protection against UV damage when used with sunscreen. Superfruit FermBiotic G can help reduce skin inflammation to support an even skin tone and it can diminish the look of dullness as well as improve overall skin texture, tone and clarity.
Energy booster
Marine FermBiotic L is a probiotic extracted from the isolated secretions of Lactobacillus bulgaricus cells. It acts as a protective shield, supports a balanced skin microbiome, boosts collagen production and reduces the appearance of redness. This can be considered as anti-irritant or soothing benefits.

The energy booster extract also improves the look of fine lines and wrinkles and helps reduce skin inflammation. It supports skin renewal and repair, improves eczema and dermatitis, speeds up the healing of burns and scars and improves skin’s innate immunity.
Through the established MTT Assay, which measures how ingredients impact the vitality of growing cells, Marine FermBiotic L has been proven to stimulate epidermal (keratinocytes) and dermal (fibroblasts) skin cells by 21%.
The key ingredients of Marine FermBiotic L are Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate, blue-green algae, brown seaweed and sea lettuce. The combination of algae extracts creates a product rich in betacarotene, chlorophyll, proteins and omega fatty acids.
Collagen booster
Adaptogen FermBiotic S consists of tiger grass, beet root, snow mushroom and Saccharomyces cerevisiae – a naturally-derived species of yeast from the fungi kingdom which is also known as ‘baker’s yeast’.
It is a rich source of prebiotics and postbiotics which supports a balanced skin microbiome. It is also rich in essential minerals, amino acids, beta-glucan and vitamins and can help increase skin hydration. Studies have shown the firming benefits of Adaptogen FermBiotic S through boosting collagen production and increased skin elasticity. It has also shown a superior ability to increase type I collagen expression in fibroblasts by 28% based on in vitro cell studies.
The complex supports a balanced skin microbiome through pre- and postbiotic packed Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Also known as Gotu Kola, tiger grass is considered one of the ‘miracle elixirs of life’ in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicines. Snow mushroom is touted as an organic alternative to hyaluronic acid due to its ability to hold 500 times its weight in water and to penetrate deeper within the skin.
