Coschem members brush up on sustainability trends

What are planetary boundaries? Do net zero and carbon neutral mean the same thing? Is ‘compostable’ packaging truly green or just greenwashing? These are just some of the questions that were asked and answered on 2 March during a Coschem online seminar centred on sustainability trends.

Delivered by Julia Tew of The Circular Stage Consultancy, the presentation provided context as to why global consumers are more concerned than ever about the future of the planet. Buying behaviours are increasingly reflecting their desire for products that minimise environmental harm, respect biodiversity, human and animal rights, and leave a much smaller footprint in terms of carbon emissions, pollution and waste.

Formulators, brand owners and marketers alike can benefit from an improved understanding, and application, of sustainable practices and regulations – from ESG reporting and carbon accounting to extended producer responsibility (EPR), circular design and nurturing a culture of sustainability and collaboration within the industry.

Plastic-free and refillable products

Some of the packaging trends Tew covered in her presentation included a move towards plastic-free products such as solid hair and skin care bars, and mycelium-based gift packs that grow into shape. Makeup is being offered in refillable packs, as are other toiletries, and bioplastics are emerging, but not without some consumer confusion around responsible disposal thereof.

Online shoppers are more empowered than ever to find ‘green’, ethical and locally made products thanks to blockchain-based verification systems and e-commerce sites dedicated to shopping ‘by value’.

The bigger picture of sustainability

Julia Tew

Companies choosing to embrace more sustainable business models and practices have been shown to be better positioned to withstand the numerous challenges posed by climate change and supply chain disruption. They can also benefit from enhanced relationships with staff, customers and communities as well as a stronger market reputation.

Coschem is looking to host further presentations this year by The Circular Stage, which is a communications consultancy dedicated to helping organisations and their people develop the skills, mindset and tools required to embed more sustainable, inclusive and future-fit behaviours and strategies. The consultancy offers a range of presentations, workshops and talks on topics ranging from sustainability, systems thinking and circularity to inner development goals, positive intelligence, and the four day week.
