Beauty brands cross into pharmacy territory: SAPHEX signals market shift

·

3 min read 3 min

The boundaries between beauty and healthcare are rapidly as beauty brands cross into pharmacy territory.

This was highly evident than at this year’s SAPHEX exhibition. Personal care brands are increasingly viewing retail pharmacies as their next growth frontier. They are positioning themselves alongside traditional health offerings to capture consumers seeking science-backed wellness solutions.

The convergence of beauty brands cross in pharmacy territory is driven by several factors:

  • Growing consumer demand for ‘dermocosmetics’ and wellness-focused products.
  • Shift from reactive beauty to preventative health solutions.
  • Retail pharmacies transforming into comprehensive ‘health hubs’.
  • Rise of ‘masstige’ products (prestige for the masses) in pharmacy chains.

Wellness through natural hair and body care

Nativechild exemplifies how personal care brands are repositioning for the pharmacy market. Their plant-based, locally manufactured formulations for Afro, kinky and coily hair aren’t just about beauty – they address specific health concerns:

  • Clinical benefits: Hair growth support, scalp health, breakage reduction.
  • Pharmacy-friendly credentials: Vegan, sulfate-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free.
  • Health positioning: Products designed for scalp recovery and sensitive skin conditions.
  • Local advantage: South African-manufactured, understanding local hair needs.

Their clean ingredient profile and therapeutic positioning make them well-suited for pharmacy shelves where customers seek trusted, health-conscious solutions.

Sports recovery meets retail health

Featured on the DTIC’s pavilion, Isiba Organics showcased how wellness brands are claiming space traditionally reserved for pharmaceuticals. Their range of sports recovery solutions, nutraceuticals and natural wellness products represents the evolution of pharmacy retail beyond traditional medicine.

Isiba Organics therapeutic range includes a Sport Ointment Massage Oil targeted at physiotherapists and chiropractors, a Muscle & Joint Ointment Balm for targeted pain relief, and a Tummy Mummy Antenatal Balm serving the maternal health market. The brand also offers hair care products for textured African hair. These products are formulated with indigenous ingredients, such as African Manketti, Helichrysum and Katafray oils.

Their professional market positioning makes Isiba Organics particularly well-suited for pharmacy expansion, offering products in both personal and professional sizes that bridge traditional medicine and natural wellness. Their focus on therapeutic claims rather than general wellness positioning, combined with heritage ingredients that resonate with conscious consumers, represents what modern pharmacy health hubs are seeking to offer their customers seeking natural alternatives to conventional treatments.

The pharmacy-as-health-hub trend

Modern retail pharmacies are expanding their role, offering:

  • Clinical services (vaccinations, diagnostic testing)
  • Expanded personal care lines
  • Wellness consultation services
  • Preventative health products

This transformation creates opportunities for personal care brands that can demonstrate genuine health benefits rather than purely cosmetic appeal.

For personal care manufacturers, this trend signals:

  • A need for science-backed formulations
  • The importance of clean, pharmacy-appropriate ingredient profiles
  • An opportunity to reach health-conscious consumers
  • The potential for higher margins in the healthcare space.

As the lines between beauty, wellness and healthcare continue to blur, brands that successfully navigate this convergence will capture the growing market of consumers who view personal care as an extension of their health routine. SAPHEX 2026 demonstrated that this shift isn’t coming – it’s already here.
