How will advances in science and technology drive emerging trends in cosmetic formulations? In-cosmetics Formulation Summit will answer this and more questions when it returns to London from 25 to 26 October.

The expansive programme will explore various pertinent topics, from the abolition of ageing and the beauty Metaverse to the role of AI, microplastics, marine technology, neurocosmetics and more. Register today to save your seat.
Supported by the Green Chemist Consultancy, 22 sessions are confirmed at the two-day summit, with speakers from Mintel, EcoBeautyScore Consortium, APIVITA, Lubrizol Life Science, Naturbeads, Cargill, London Futurists, OPRL and The Blue Ocean Programme.
Are we nearing the longevity escape velocity?
In what is undoubtedly going to be a thought-provoking session, David Wood, Author, Chair, London Futurists, will discuss the point at which science can extend a lifespan; the perception of ageing and the radical extension of human longevity; the accelerating field of rejuvenation biology; and the possibility of indefinite lifespans. Wood’s appearance at this year’s Summit represents an unmissable chance to hear from one of the pioneering futurists and thinkers on the impact of technology on the human experience.
The Metaverse: limitless possibilities for beauty
Delving into a whole new world for formulators to master, Becci Vallis, Freelance Journalist in the health, beauty, and wellness sector will explore the Metaverse at this year’s Formulation Summit. With examples of multinationals applying for trademarks for all new concepts such as virtual perfume and virtual cosmetics for avatars, the metaverse represents all-new possibilities for the beauty sector, where consumers can ‘live’ free from real-life restrictions.
For example, in places such as Decentraland – a 3D virtual world browser-based platform – users create, explore and trade NFT (non-fungible tokens) digital collectables, such as virtual cosmetics. Here, an opportunity for brands lies in replicating these virtual cosmetics with twin products in the real world. Will formulating personalised cosmetics in the future start with a virtual NTF product as its benchmark? This session will help attendees understand the opportunities and how to break into this exciting new landscape.
The science of scents gets an AI upgrade
Demonstrating how the convergence of design, scent and technology is leading the future of fragrance and odour language will be Olivia Jezler, Founder of Future of Smell. Jezler will help Summit attendees understand how computer-driven fragrance design tools are helping bridge the gap between the physical, digital, and sensory worlds, to inspire connection, sensory wellness, and new ways of thinking. The session will demonstrate the new collaborative opportunities for creators around the globe, and how AI and machine learning is turning raw data into fragrance wisdom.
Joining forces for the future
In addition to exploring the role of technology in advancing the latest trends, the benefits of collaboration will also be under the spotlight at this year’s Summit. Kicking off the 2022 proceedings, a representative from Mintel will demonstrate how joining forces is helping brands accelerate accountability and translate their sustainability achievements into credible brand communications.
Elsewhere, the benefits of working together will be addressed by EcoBeautyScore Consortium, which earlier this year announced it had joined forces with more than 50 cosmetics and personal care companies, as well as professional associations, to develop an industry-wide environmental impact assessment and scoring system for cosmetics products. The session will help attendees understand how using a robust and scientific approach provides consumers with clear, transparent, and comparable environmental impact information, based on science-based methodologies.
A packed schedule of high-level insights
With such a packed schedule of high-level insights, attendees are invited to learn more about the latest formulation approaches and ingredients helping to fast-track sustainability. Konstantinos Gardikis, Research & Development Director at APIVITA, will address why sustainability is now a way of life for contemporary organisations, and that a holistic, operational mindset is required to restore and regenerate the environment for the future without compromising the quality of life.
Margaret Bates, Executive Director, OPRL will recap the how, what and why of recycling labels and how the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme is going to impact every business that puts packaging on the UK market – no matter the sector or origin. Elsewhere, Olivia Santoni (CEO) and Amanda Isom (Regulatory Affairs Director), Bloom Regulatory Limited will provide the latest regulatory landscape on environmental claims; while Francis McGlone, Head of the Somatosensory & Affective Neuroscience Group, School of Natural Sciences & Psychology, Liverpool JM University will highlight the importance of neuro-cosmetics to connect sensation with emotional well-being.
Meanwhile, addressing the latest sustainable ingredient trends, Mathilde Allegre, Manager Global LLS Sustainability, and Anna Perez Gassio, Technical Service & Applications Scientist, Lubrizol Life Science (LLS) Beauty, will introduce attendees to its luxurious bio-based oil made from microalgae; Dr Giovanna Laudisio, CEO and Co-founder of Naturbeads, will detail how cellulose microbeads are a sustainable alternative to microplastics in cosmetics; while Alexandra Fournier, Senior Application Specialist at Cargill, will help attendees discover unlimited nature-derived texture options with one INCI name: Carrageenans.
Roziani Zulkifli, Event Director of in-cosmetics Formulation Summit, said: “We are delighted to reveal more details of this year’s packed line-up of high-level insights and renowned industry experts. As illustrated by the sessions at this year’s Formulation Summit, the importance of collaboration and coming together to discuss and learn about the latest trends and technologies is critical to our success. We look forward to providing a platform for the industry to do this with even more opportunities to get involved in the discussion. We will be revealing more details soon, so watch this space.”
