Will you be joining the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (Coschem) for its virtual scientific conference, on 8 and 9 September? Themed ‘The Beauty Odyssey, Face-off’, the conference will be hosted in association with MGG Productions.
The scientific conference will showcase an array of international and local presenters, who will provide scientific insight into topics such as eczema, silicium in skin, skin hydration, blue light protection, emulsifiers, the human microbiome, cannabidiol, ascorbic acid, LOC/LCO hair properties, daily sun exposure, skin ageing, anti-greying, dark spots and pigmentation control, hair styling, dandruff control, anti-acne treatment. There is still time to register if you haven’t done so yet.
Coschem boasts a comprehensive programme with six virtual sessions presented over two days. Chair of the scientific committee, Beverley Gardner will be in studio with MGG Productions hosting the conference in real-time and all presentations will be streamed via the unique link sent to registered participants.
The science of skin care
During session 1 Emmanuel Coste of Exsymol will use his experience in multifactorial genetics and cell biology to explain how silicium restores skin architecture.
Marizè Nel of the University of Pretoria will focus on South African plants used in the treatment of eczema and the effects of these plants against tyrosinase and cytokine production.
Prof Beverley Summers of Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and who established the first SPF testing facility in South Africa, will address the contentious issue of skin moisturisation claims and whether statistical significance should suffice without true clinical significance.
Blue is the new black
Marina Lefort of Merck will illuminate the issue of digital ageing and the rising demand for protection from blue light. Lefort’s areas of expertise are skin protection, skin pigmentation and bio-actives.
Sun care debate
The Coschem conference will kick up a gear in session 3 with a debate and panel discussion on what does the future hold for sun filters? Keep your sunscreens handy and apply evenly, less you get sunburnt when Prof Beverley Summers and Marelize Lategan (SMU) debate head-on with industry colleagues Heibrie Le Roux (Future Cosmetics) and Wayne van Wyk (Vantage South Africa).

Pauline Chanut of Seppic Research & Innovation will showcase a new formulation lever that promises an attractive tan with daily exposure.
As only a dual pharma and chemical engineering specialist can do, Cyrielle Rakotovao of Sederma will extrapolate the term ‘exposome’ and shall demonstrate how UVB irradiation of human fibroblasts induces a modification of the mitochondrial repartition in favour of the isolated one.
Olivier Garet of DSM Nutritional Products closes off session 4 by explaining the benefits of organic extracts for hair loss prevention and anti-greying hydration, coupled with sebum reduction.
Naturals panel discussion
Consumer demand has resulted in more mainstream brands and retailers giving more lip service to the concept of clean beauty and natural beauty offerings. But what exactly is the clean beauty movement, are natural ingredients inherently better than synthetic ingredients and do natural raw materials have place in South African personal care formulations?
Answers to these questions will debated during the naturals panel discussion featuring Will Coetsee (Botanica Natural Products), John Knowlton (Cosmetic Solutions), Prof Namrita Lall (University of Pretoria), Charis Lewis (Investchem), and Wayne Robertson, (Pharmaceutical Marketing Consulting Group).
