Karin Barends is an entrepreneur who is passionate about the cosmetics industry. She started her own distribution company three years ago as the majority shareholder of Afrisil Speciality Ingredients, which continues to go from strength to strength.
Pharmaceutical & Cosmetic Review chatted to Karin about the significance of National Women’s Day and why more women should be encouraged to pursue career opportunities in the cosmetics industry.
Why is Women’s Day significant?

Although I believe women should be celebrated daily, National Women’s Day is a reminder of where we came from and what was sacrificed for us to be in the positions we are today. We still have a long way to go as women in this country, but it is encouraging to see the various platforms where women inspire each other to be the best possible individual, employee or entrepreneur etc.
What makes you proud to be a woman working in the industry?
I have been in the South African cosmetics industry for close on 20 years and I am truly inspired by the strong young women in managerial roles as well as those who have taken the plunge to launch their own brands or start their own distribution companies.
We can see on social media platforms such as Instagram or YouTube the amount of young women who have launched their own brands, from hair care and skin care brands to colour cosmetics. This is not only a sign of the times of female empowerment in the industry but also a true reflection of the direction in which the industry is headed, as most of these women-owned brands are largely ‘conscious’ brands. I am especially excited that this shift includes women of colour. I also think that the cosmetics industry is more inclusive in terms of opportunities.
Why is diversity in the workplace important?
I think that if diversity, inclusiveness and gender equality become policy and are embedded in any business strategy the business will thrive. If these aspects are in place employees feel ‘safe’. Ultimately, it also fosters creativity and innovation and in the end profitability increases.
How can we encourage more women to pursue a career in cosmetics?
The industry should look at extending various mentorship programmes/internships by collaborating with corporates. These programmes could be targeted at students and school learners and could take place during the school holidays. These programmes are also ideal for students taking a ‘gap year’ as they are unsure of what direction to follow.
With the help of the industry leaders, organisations such as Coschem could facilitate an ‘open day’ where students/pupils could learn about opportunities within the industry.
What is the most important message you want to give young women?
If you can harness your mindset and improve your self-esteem, you will understand that nothing is off limits and that one can learn any skill. Do not be afraid to try new things, as you are worthy and powerful. Everything is within your ability. Believe in yourself and most importantly, love yourself.
