Local cosmetic scientist launches Magina R&D Consulting

A specialist in formulation, research and development of Afro hair and ethnic skin care products.

Led by cosmetic scientist, Lutendo Magina, the company is based in Centurion, Gauteng. Lutendo has 12 years’ international experience in research and development, innovation and formulation technologies, manufacturing, quality control and regulatory affairs in cosmetics and detergents.

“I realised that there are a lot of small emerging brands with good concepts and great innovation ideas, but they lack the technical expertise of product development and access to manufacturing. And that is where Magina R&D Consulting fills the gap,” Lutendo explains.

The consultancy operates out of a state-of-the art laboratory where full product development takes place. Lutendo’s favourite picture hangs in the lab’s reception as a symbol of his commitment to promote the use of natural ingredients into proper chemistry processes to innovate natural-inspired Afro hair and skin care products.

Multinational experience and patented work

“We also conduct performance testing for each product using our network of salon-based hairdressers. Once a product passes all the testing stages and the client approves, we proceed to manufacture any quantity and deliver directly to your door,” he adds.

Lutendo has worked for giant international cosmetic companies in the R&D field where he gained a lot of experience and skills. One of his greatest achievements was the successful 2020 US patent application for the project Hair Treatment Agent Comprising Specific Chelating Agent.

A one-stop shop

The idea to start an R&D consulting business was motivated by the high demand for service from small and medium brands while he was still employed. During this time, Lutendo would refer potential clients to other labs.

Magina R&D Consulting has been fully operation since October 2022 and Lutendo says there is a significant demand for his services among small and medium brands and even some multinational brands. The company offers a full service experience from NPD to packaging design.
