·

3 min read 3 min

At last – a book that explains the real science behind the cosmetics we use. Discovering Cosmetic Science is written and edited by experts from the Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS) and published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC).

Editors of the book include Steve Barton, Allan Eastham, Amanda Isom, Denise McLaverty and Yi Ling Soong. Discovering Cosmetic Science is available in paperback from the RSC and in paperback and Kindle format from Amazon.

This ‘novice’s guide’ takes a gentle approach, guiding the reader on a journey through different product types. Readers will discover that these products are not as superficial as often thought while learning that there is some amazing science behind them. The book also uncovers some of the truths behind myths and points out some interesting facts along the way.

For example, did you know?

  • Vitamin E is the world’s most used cosmetic active ingredient.
  • At just 1mm thick, your amazing skin keeps out just about everything it’s exposed to – including your products.
  • A ‘chemical soup’ of amino acids, urea, mineral salts and organic acids acts as a ‘water magnet’ in the skin, keeping it naturally moisturised.
  • Discovered centuries ago, iron oxides (yes, the same chemicals as rust) are still commonly used inorganic pigments in foundations.

What people have to say about the book

“I cannot say enough good things about this book; a ‘must have’ item for anyone of any level interested in cosmetic science and the industry. Thoroughly recommended.” – Fujihiro Kanda, Mukogawa Women’s University, Japan

“I don’t know a book like this on the planet… This book goes beyond all that it is intended for YOU, the interested layperson who uses all these products in one form or another.” – Meyer R Rosen, editor in chief, Harry’s Cosmeticology & Eurocosmetics

“The fact that people of all levels of experience and education can read, enjoy and easily learn cosmetic science make this book an essential for everyone that makes, uses or sells cosmetics!” – Tony O’Lenick, Nascent Technologies

Discovering Cosmetic Science is a science-based book but it’s chatty and clear and with a personality of its own – it’s not just bland text and the writing style keeps you wanting to dip back in for more.” – Jane Cunningham, British Beauty Blogger
