Oleon to highlight sustainable ester technology at in-cosmetics Asia

At in-cosmetics Asia, Oleon and INCITE will present solutions for a greener and more sustainable personal care industry.

Oleon Health & Beauty (Oleon) will be attending this year’s highly anticipated in-cosmetics Asia, taking place from 1 to 3 November at BITEC in Bangkok. The company is a specialist in converting natural fats and oils into a wide range of products, including fatty acids, glycerine, esters, dimers, technical oils, and speciality oleochemicals.

During the trade show, Oleon will highlight its participation in the INCITE project – an initiative by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme. The project, which will culminate in December 2023, is aimed at the creation of a more flexible and sustainable chemical sector in Europe. Oleon is one of eight partners taking part. 

Rune Daneels, product manager at Oleon explains, “The aim of the INCITE project is to move the chemicals and ingredients industry from a chemical catalytic system to one that embraces enzymatic esterification in both upstream and downstream processing. While this will benefit a wide range of industries, Oleon is focused on particular benefits for the beauty and personal care sector.”

Oleon has achieved great success during the project with two products developed which could significantly impact sustainability. 

Technology with tangible environmental benefits

“Enzymatic Isopropyl Palminate and Enzymatic Isoamyl Laurate are esters produced by our enzymatic process and offer a lower reaction temperature and pressure than conventional chemical reactions. This has a significant impact on lowering a manufacturer’s environmental footprint. Moreover, the products offer higher purity, a lower odour score and fewer VOCs, increasing the overall quality of finished products,” Daneels comments. 

“Compared to traditional chemical synthesis, these chemo-enzymatic processes have clear advantages of greater efficiency, higher product quality and reduced environmental impact. What’s more is the tangible environmental benefits of enzymatic esterification are becoming clear. They include optimising energy consumption with the use of lower process temperatures, less waste which reduces one’s carbon footprint, increased process safety and product purity and ultimately, increased productivity.”

The expected impact of the INCITE project is the successful widening of the industrial implementation of enzymatic process technologies in the commodity, fine and speciality chemical industry. By partnering with this ambitious project, Oleon will establish itself and its products as a future market leader in the development of environmentally friendly beauty and personal care ingredients.
