Creating high Renewable Carbon Index (RCI), higher efficacy formulations score positively with modern beauty consumers. Even more so when targeting a responsible impact and relatable consumer needs. These needs include using ethically-sourced natural ingredients to relieve specific skin damage from, for example, shaving or face mask wearing, or giving priority to the added convenience and lower environmental impact of a waterless solid shampoo bar.
Throughout 2021, Clariant has elevated its support for the personal care industry to embrace more responsible, trend-focused beauty. It has unveiled multiple relevant new ingredients and premium formulations with science-backed effectiveness and differentiation. And there’s more stand-out innovation on its way from Clariant.

New emollient launching soon
Coming soon, the personal care team is set to launch a new emollient to replenish and restore skin lipid balance. An imbalance of skin lipids can cause skin to change status, bringing on dry, oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin. This new emollient is a near-perfect replica of the skin’s own sebum, responding to individual skin needs. Made from (palm-free) plant oils, it is 100% bio-based and 100% renewable. This emollient is particularly suitable for face care formulations, generating an appealing, natural-feel sensory coat which fuses with the skin.
Clariant’s latest ingredient joins the company’s 2021 innovations in widening options to use responsibly-sourced solutions to address skin and hair care issues, promote healthy-aging and adapt products to new social norms.
Inspirational trend-focused formulations
In a world in the process of establishing a ‘new normal’, BeautyForward No. 5 delivers inspirational formulations tailored to the trends driving new societal behaviours. Think skin care for mask-wearing, moisturising hand cleansers and at-home salon standard hair care, as well as relaxing formulations that highlight the overlap between skin care and self-care.
The formulations, featuring innovative ingredients, are crafted around the take-aways of three global trends, emphasising the need for togetherness, more luxury in hygiene beauty, and solid formats to support plastic-free and packaging reduction.
“The packaging of cosmetic and personal care products is under a lot of scrutiny, with the onus on brands to package more sustainably,” comments Jasmine Shah, Clariant’s customer experience and trend leader. “To that end, solid concentrate formulations are becoming one of the most viable contenders for reducing the amount of packaging required. Overall, the creation of solid formulations paves the way for waste prevention and the use of safer ingredients.”
As concentrates, solid products provide more use for a given volume than their liquid format alternatives, thereby reducing packaging demands and ultimately enabling a reduction or elimination of packaging waste. With reduced water content in formulations, solid formats also open doors to alternative packaging choices such as cardboard or cork. Less water also means that solid products can provide the option of less preservative in a formulation. Clariant highlights the possibilities to go solid without compromising on cleansing benefits through a nourishing bath melt and a solid “Hair Necessities” shampoo bar.
Discover new skin care actives
Clariant takes on a major contributor to the physiological skin ageing process – cellular senescence – and the impact of regular external stressors in a new extract derived from white thistle by-product. By erasing impaired zombie cells, the award-winning Celyscence extract contributes healthy-ageing benefits to facial and the less explored décolleté area. It leads to improved brightness, hydration and visible firmness by protecting the skin and repairing damaged cells. Visible results on ageing skins showed increases hydration by 14% and brightness by 3% after eight weeks of use on the décolleté. Melanin content on the face decreased by 5% after two weeks of use.
The eco-conscious barrier function balancer Ethience Protect is a sustainable active ingredient developed by Clariant Active Ingredients and its Brazilian partner, Beraca. Ethience Protect is extracted from the Brazil nut, which is ethically sourced from the Amazon communities. It reinforces the three levels of the skin barrier to address compromised skins impacted by enhanced external aggressions, such as face mask wearing or daily shaving. It significantly improves hydration and reduces redness, visible proof of easing skin damage. Visible results on compromised skins included an increase of 28% in hydration and an 8% decrease in redness after 35 days on men who shave daily. Hydration improved by 52% after 35 days on women who wear a mask all day.
Give natural leave-on skincare the feel it deserves with plant-based rheology modifier, Plantasens Biogum Tara. Addressing the market need for a better performing natural rheology modifier, the new 100% RCI and readily biodegradable solution, based on a food industry ingredient tara gum, outperforms popular natural benchmarks through its thickening power and light, non-stringy texture.
Plantasens Biogum Tara avoids the otherwise typical low viscosity, stringiness and unpleasant feel, achieving a superior smoothness in look, and a pleasant touch and application feel for natural leave-on skin care creams, lotions and masks.
